Have you ever gone to buy candles online and seen sites talking about a candle's fragrance notes and wondered what are they talking about? In this post, we'll explain what all that means and how they come together to create one signature scent!

So, what are fragrance notes?

Fragrance notes are used to describe the smell of a fragrance. They're multiple layers of fragrance notes that are meant to enhance and complement each other. They can range from floral to fruity to woody and everything in between.

Top notes

When you smell a fragrance, the scents you detect first are the top notes. These are usually fresh and light aromas that dissipate quickly. Top notes account for around 10% of a fragrance's total ingredients. They're also the most volatile in scent, meaning they vaporize easily.

Middle notes come after top notes but before the base note of a perfume.

The middle are what you'll experience next. These notes tend to be more subtle and don't stick around as long as the other scent notes; instead, they develop over time due to chemical reactions caused by heat with air currents flowing through an open container.

Base notes are the least volatile ingredients in a fragrance.

Base notes are the least volatile ingredients in a fragrance. They are typically the last to evaporate, and they're usually used sparingly because they're more potent than other scents. Base notes are also longer lasting than top or middle notes. Because of their longevity, base notes often help anchor lighter scents by providing a solid foundation for them to build from.
